Wow, it's been an interesting ride for me...especially the past 3 years! I moved back to Colorado the end of 2007 to rebuild my life after living in Utah with the last name of Jeffs. (Get it Warren Jeffs the polygamist.....) A year later, I went back to school - I wanted to learn graphic arts, in order to learn to design my own paper line eventually... never did I think it would change to be so much more! Oh, scrapbooking and creating is still a part of it, but learning the things I am might at least help me to bring my artisticness to my work...and be able to succeed!
When you first start to scrapbook - you have no idea what you are doing...you just slap the photos on the paper and add a few stickers to it and say it's a scrapbook page...I did the exact same thing. I tried to use each photo that was taken for that event on my pages, and throwing some stickers or die cuts on it too. Not too effective now that I look back...yes I got pages done, but at what expense? I look back now and wish I could spend the time to redo them...
If you ARE just starting out - look at doing a mini album...using 12 x 12 cardstock cut in 4th's to create 4 6 x 6 pages. If you take 5 sheets of paper, this gives you a wonderful 6 x 6 mini album with 20 pages...take an event that you just had (Valentines day just passed) use the photos you have from that event. It is easier to design a 6 x 6 page with a photo on it than to design a huge 12 x 12 page, so start smaller than larger!
Also look at kits differently, you can also get an 8 x 8 album in a kit, so you can add the pages to the album as you go. Most of the time, if you stick with one of these two sizes - you can finish up a project in a day instead of a year to see any results! Also keep in mind, you can have multiple projects going on at once, maybe a family album, an All About Me album, or maybe a yearly album for each kid. If you are single with no kids...I recommend an All About Me album, this is a totally different twist on the traditional pages you see because the theme is YOU.
Look at what you DO have when you are just starting out...do you have a computer? This little tool (if you have a printer) can make it so you will be able to do titles, journaling.... or print out clip art if you find one that is perfect for your creation! Some projects just do not need to have photos on them...I am doing a challenge right now with Scriptures... How do you take a photo of a scripture!
Scrapbooking is not about spending the most money - it's about putting your memories down on PAPER (or digitally if that is your preference). Whether you do things on the computer or you scrapbook on paper...it's just important to get it done.
